City seeks developer to rehab Des Moines Building
The city of Des Moines, which last month declared the Des Moines Building to be a public nuisance, is looking for a developer to rehabilitate the 80-year-old downtown landmark at 405 Sixth Ave.
As it works to obtain legal title to the approximately 150,000-square-foot building, the city plans to solicit proposals from a number of developers, one of which would be selected to tackle the estimated $15 million to $20 million project.
Several developers already have shown an interest, according to city records. If a viable redevelopment proposal is received, the city will set a public hearing on the sale of the property.
First, the city must secure the vacant building’s title, which could happen anytime within the next two to six months, according to city records. In January, the city began pursuing a district court judgment that the building has been abandoned and that the title should be awarded to the city.
“The building will be sold ‘as-is’ with transfer of the utilities and other maintenance costs occurring at the time of conveyance,” city documents said.
