Bank of America reaches $410 million settlement
More than a million Bank of America Corp. debit card users could be in line for a payout after the Charlotte-based bank agreed to pay $410 million to settle a federal lawsuit, the Charlotte Business Journal reported. The settlement will put $410 million into an escrow account that will be used to pay debit card users who were charged overdraft fees as far back as 2001. The bank allegedly used a system in which the largest debit transactions were recorded first, which depleted customers’ accounts faster than if the transactions were posted chronologically. The settlement follows Bank of America’s decision last year to end all card overdraft fees. Now, transactions are denied at the point of sale instead of overdrawing an account.
