Health-care opinion expected during height of presidential campaign
The U.S. Supreme Court said today it will hear challenges to President Barack Obama’s landmark health-care law, setting the stage for the high court’s ruling on the president’s signature accomplishment in the thick of election season, MarketWatch reported. At issue will be whether the law’s mandate for individuals to have insurance or pay a fine is constitutional, as well as whether that mandate can be separated from the rest of the law. Lower courts have both upheld and shot down the mandate. A ruling on the twin questions could come by the middle of next summer, in the thick of the presidential campaign. The Republicans running to replace Obama have attacked the law and say they’d repeal it if elected to the White House.
