More money, less food donated in hunger-relief efforts
Iowa organizations contributed more than $12.1 million in the global fight against hunger during the past 12 months, the World Food Prize Foundation announced yesterday during the Fifth Annual Iowa Hunger Summit held in Des Moines. Though monetary contributions by Iowans to fight hunger increased from $9.4 million last year, total food contributions by Iowans decreased in the past year. Last year more than 12.8 million pounds of food were donated, compared with 18.6 million pounds the previous year. Volunteer hours, which totaled more than 520,000, remained steady. More than 500 people participated in the daylong summit, which included a “Hunger Luncheon” in which attendees were served the same meals that Iowa-based relief organizations provide within the state and abroad. The event marked the inaugural year of a five-year joint sponsorship of the Iowa Hunger Summit by FBL Financial Group Inc. and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.
