Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s $194 million headquarters will not only be among the largest construction projects in Des Moines over the next couple of years, but it also will be the first new commercial owner-occupied building in Central Iowa to go for a gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system, the second-highest rating.
The design of the 550,000-square-foot building is still in progress, but Wellmark recently submitted a few proposals to Des Moines’ Urban Design Review Board to work through different features. One of the focuses will be on being pedestrian-friendly, said Wellmark spokeswoman Angela Feig. The building also is expected to be five stories, encouraging employees to take the stairs rather than the elevator.
Vacant buildings on the site are being demolished, and Wellmark plans to move into the completed building by 2010.
