Judith Conlin faces a fresh challenge in her long career in the nonprofit sector, as the new executive director of the Iowa Council for International Understanding (ICIU).

Conlin replaces Valerie Grimsley, who resigned in December to return to Mexico for another job opportunity after serving as executive director since May 2006. Before that, Michele Soria served as executive director, but resigned over a disagreement with ICIU’s board of directors.

“Part of my message to the board was we want stability,” Conlin said. “I’ve committed to helping provide that stability in terms of committing to at least four to five years in this position and committing to helping raise additional financial resources.”

One of Conlin’s main goals will be to enhance ICIU’s efforts to help people from different countries and cultures connect with needed resources and information.

Conlin has served in leadership roles at many organizations, including the Mid-Iowa chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and the Iowa Department of Elder Affairs. She recently finished her fifth edition of a guidebook for women who are unemployed, underemployed or underpaid.

Conlin also has had many multicultural experiences, including extensive travel to places such as China, the former Soviet Union, Africa and Peru. She chaired the first Multicultural Nonsexist Advisory Committee for the Ames Community School District and helped provide services to Asian women through Monsoon and United Asian Women of Iowa.

“I have an insatiable need for variety,” Conlin said, “and I’m excited about this opportunity to be helpful to people, putting resources at their fingertips, facilitating their move to Iowa.”
