More than 1 million Iowans have filed their state income tax returns electronically so far this tax season, putting Iowa on track to again be among the leading states in percentage of e-filed returns.
As of mid-April, the number of people e-filing their individual income tax returns was up about 7 percent from last year, said Renee Mulvey, a spokeswoman for the Iowa Department of Revenue. “We’re really pleased,” she said, “and it’s particularly impressive because we don’t mandate e-filing as some states do.” Last year 69 percent of individual taxpayers in Iowa filed electronically, and that figure should exceed 70 percent this year, Mulvey said. (Year-to-date, the percentage stands at 84 percent, but last-minute paper filers will bring the overall percentage down).
According to the Federation of Tax Administrators, Iowa was the top state for e-filing in 2005 at 64 percent, and as of mid-February was third in the nation for percentage of e-filers after California and Kentucky.
