Can today’s eighth-grader become tomorrow’s millionaire? With early entrepreneurial training, it’s possible. Two entrepreneurship camps this summer will provide opportunities for Greater Des Moines students to find out what it’s like to run their own businesses.
The Jacobson Entrepreneurship Academy, for students in grades 7-9, will be held in Des Moines from July 28 to Aug. 1 at the John and Mary Pappajohn Education Center. And the Iowa Association of Business and Industry Foundation will again host Business Horizons for ninth- through 12th-graders, which will run from July 20 to July 25 at Simpson College in Indianola.
In both programs, students work in small groups to develop products they pitch to a panel of judges, and have the opportunity to network with students from across the state as well as with entrepreneurs who will share their start-up stories.
The Jacobson Entrepreneurship Academy is sponsored by the Jacobson Institute for Youth Entrepreneurship at the University of Iowa, which also hosts annual entrepreneurial camps in Iowa City. The Des Moines camp, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, costs $159, which includes bus transportation for tours to business sites, class materials, snacks, lunches and a graduation reception. Registration materials are available online at www.jacobsoninstitute.org.
Business Horizons, in its 25th year, last year hosted 103 students and expects to register between 125 and 150 students this year. The fee for the program is $195 for registrations received before May 15, and college credit is available for completing the program. For more information, visit www.businesshorizonsiowa.com.
