Sports led the LaFleurs to their profession, and their profession led them to each other. After Benjamin participated in wrestling and track at the University of Northern Iowa, and after Elizabeth was a cheerleader at the University of Illinois, they each attended Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, where they met.

“Both an interest in sports and wanting to help people” attracted the LaFleurs to chiropractic medicine, he said.

Benjamin and Elizabeth LaFleur opened the doors to their new chiropractic office, LaFleur Chiropractic P.L.C., in West Glen Town Center last week – a little over a month before their first wedding anniversary.

Sports were not only a factor in their career choice, but also had an influence in the layout of their office and in the future goals of both the LaFleurs. Each room in the office is named after a college sports mascot, from the Panthers for UNI to the Illini for UI and Bulldogs for Drake.

A future career goal for both Benjamin (who is in the process now) and Elizabeth is to become certified strength and conditioning specialists.

“We want to someday work closely with professional athletes,” he said.

Other goals include completing the last class to become certified chiropractic extremity practitioners, or extremity specialists to work on areas from shoulders and wrists to hips and ankles. They also are looking to work with orthotics at LaFleur Chiropractic in the future.

The LaFleurs chose West Des Moines to open their first practice because it is in between Champaign, Ill., where Elizabeth grew up, and Sioux City, Benjamin’s hometown. They checked out 70 different properties before settling in West Glen.

Their facility in-cludes his and hers offices, an X-ray room, a therapy room and an exam room, along with other amenities. To give it a unique feeling, the LaFleurs have decorated their office with stone, leather and rich colors.

“Usually offices are all white and feel sterile,” he said.

Other features at LaFleur Chiropractic include fresh-baked cookies and a fireplace in the waiting area, flat-screen TVs in the rooms and a paraffin wax service.

“In this area, there are lots of chiropractors,” Benjamin said. “(Patients) can spend their money anywhere, and we did not want to leave that up to chance.”
