Describe your basic workout regimen.

I like a variety. I walk, bike and participate at various classes at the YMCA, including step aerobics, their strength training Y-Pump, Pi-Yo, kickboxing, etc.

How have you changed that regimen over the years?

I added more walking and biking.

Do you set small goals and reward yourself for reaching them? How?

Definitely. It just depends on the goal; sometimes it is fitting into a fun outfit and sometimes it’s biking those few extra miles so you’ve “earned” an adult beverage at an establishment on the way home.

Any fitness goals you’re working toward?

A 70-mile day on the bike, hopefully by the end of the summer.

Do you work out with a partner or a group or alone? Why?

I have to say my wonderful husband is my biggest fan! He’s always ready to walk or bike with me and push me just a little further. The YMCA classes also provide group motivation to keep up with the instructor and others in the class.

What are the keys to your diet?

I try to plan ahead whenever possible so I know how to balance delicious and nutritious options. Breakfast is practically mandatory, even if it’s just a yogurt or a couple of eggs or toast or something. I bring a lunch and healthy snack options about 95 percent of the time and try to work in extra activity if I know I’m going to an event or out with friends where “cheat” items are more prevalent.

What advice would you give to someone starting on a workout program?

Everyone starts somewhere, so just keep going forward from where you are. The results are realized through consistency. One “bad” day isn’t going to make or break you any more than one “good” day, so just have more “good” days.

What motivates you to stay in shape?

Feeling strong and healthy, which increases my confidence, having my clothes fit well/comfortably and the compliments and encouragement from my great husband!
