Wind-energy supplier expands to Texas

Availon Inc., a Grimes-based provider of parts and engineering services to the wind power industry in North America, announced it has opened a service and distribution center in Sweetwater, Texas, to serve southwestern U.S. markets. The company said it selected Texas for its second distribution center based on its large number of installed turbines and the presence of seven of the nation’s 10 largest wind farms there. Steve Thompson, Availon’s North America president, said the Southwest is one of his company’s key markets. The new center will have a fully staffed parts warehouse and full-time engineering, technical and sales personnel on location. The German-based parent company established its North American headquarters and service/distribution center in Grimes in 2009. The company has about 25 employees in Iowa and five in Texas.
