The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) today released a comprehensive study of the community banking industry.

Among the key findings: Community banks make up 95 percent of U.S. banking organizations and are the only physical banking presence in nearly one in five U.S. counties; community banks made 46 percent of the industry’s small loans to farms and businesses in 2011; and regulations and record-low interest rates are affecting the industry.
