Results of a statewide survey released recently found that 97 percent of Iowa children have health insurance coverage, but that 13 percent go hungry at least some of the time. The University of Iowa Public Policy Center polled nearly 2,400 Iowa parents for the 2010 Iowa Child and Family Household Health Survey, which it conducts every five years. The 2010 study looked at hunger for the first time. “Perhaps due to the recession, 13 percent of children go hungry at least some of the time, in line with national statistics,” the report said. That figure rises to 40 percent for low-income children in Iowa. A majority of Iowa children feel safe in their neighborhoods and in their schools. Ninety-two percent reported they feel safe in their communities, though the percentage drops to 81 percent for low-income children. To view the complete report, click here.
