Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines was recently named a 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospital for 2013 by Truven Health Analytics.

The annual study examined the performance of more than 1,000 hospitals nationally.

The hospitals recognized had better risk-adjusted survival rates, with 41 percent fewer deaths than expected for bypass surgery patients and a 35 percent lower rate of heart failure complications than peer hospitals.

The recognized hospitals also spend $3,500 less per bypass case and $1,000 less per angioplasty than their peers, according to Truven.

Mercy has received the recognition for five years. Other Iowa hospitals on this year’s Top 50 list were Allen Hospital in Waterloo and St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
