Social media played a big role in how voters discussed this year’s presidential election, according to the Pew Research Center.

About 1 in 5 voters talked about who they voted for on Facebook or Twitter. The social media have also become venues for people to try to convince their friends to vote, Pew found.

About 30 percent of registered voters said friend or family encouraged them to vote for Barack Obama or Mitt Romney and 20 percent of voters said they have encouraged others to vote on these sites.
