Construction unemployment jumps
The unemployment rate for construction workers jumped to 22.5 percent in January as the industry’s nonresidential sector shed 35,300 jobs, according to an analysis of federal employment data by the Associated General Contractors of America. Severe winter weather likely contributed to some of last month’s layoffs, which included 21,000 nonresidential specialty trade contractor positions. The residential sector added 3,500 jobs. In the past 12 months, the construction industry has lost 130,000 jobs.
