The Wellmark Foundation announced that it has funded 13 health improvement grants in Iowa totaling nearly $1.15 million. Among the projects receiving the two-year grants were the Iowa Food Bank Association, which was awarded $150,000 to implement a program to assist state residents in applying for aid from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and other state benefits through the Internet. Another $150,000 grant went to Primary Health Care Inc. of Urbandale, which will use the funds to develop a diabetes awareness and prevention program. The Iowa Department of Public Health will use a $112,500 grant to implement a program offering healthful food and drink options in state-owned vending machines.
