Shrinking budgets hit construction employment

Construction employment increased in Greater Des Moines and the Quad Cities for the year ending in July, according to the Associated General Contractors of America. Nationwide, construction employment increased in 136 out of 337 metropolitan areas,   declined in 148 and stayed level in 53, according to a new analysis of federal employment data released today by the trade association. The group’s officials noted that local employment remains mostly stagnant amid declines in publicly funded construction activity. The Quad Cities gained 1,100 jobs, and the Des Moines-West Des Moines area picked up 700.
