Undergraduate degrees in engineering are the most valuable degrees to have based on average starting salary and average mid-career salary, according to a report by Payscale.com.

A degree in aerospace engineering topped the list with a median starting salary of $59,600 and a mid-career median salary of $109,000. Aerospace engineering was followed by degrees in chemical engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering and economics, according to the report. Seven of the top 10 degrees in the report are in the engineering field.

A degree in international business placed in the top half of the list, with an average starting salary of $41,900 and a mid-career salary of $77,800, according to the report.

Liberal arts degrees came in at the bottom, with social work ranking as the lowest-paying career. On average, the starting salary for a social worker is $33,400 with a mid-career salary of $41,600. Although the major is the lowest-paying, the social work field is growing, and there is still a high demand for jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Careers in elementary education, theology, music and Spanish rounded out the bottom of the list.
