The city of Grimes last month rolled out the most recent draft of its proposed Comprehensive Plan, which is intended to be a roadmap for economic development as the city’s population grows.

As economic demand stemming from the larger metropolitan area moves Grimes away from its agricultural roots, the plan addresses land-use regulations, such as zoning ordinances, to help keep potential developers informed.

“Having a good, well thought out comprehensive land-use plan takes a lot of uncertainty out of the equation and makes it easier to make informed decisions,” said Brian Buethe, executive director of Grimes Chamber & Economic Development. “We are very happy with the process to date.”

The construction boom between 2005 and 2007 played a significant role in the 65.1 percent increase in Grimes population over the past 10 years, to an estimated 8,419 residents in 2009.

In addition to addressing revitalization and sustainable-building issues, the plan is focused on improving residents’ quality of life and implementing a more efficient transportation system.

“A major focus of the plan is future transportation needs in the city,” Buethe said.

It is expected to be reviewed by the Planning and Zoning Commission in July before going to the City Council for final approval.

“There should be strong support,” Buethe said.
