The Des Moines Register will be affected by the 1,400 job cuts Gannett Co. Inc. announced across its U.S. community publishing division today.

The job cuts will affect 80 local dailies, including the Register and its approximately 650 employees.

Register Publisher Laura Hollingsworth said the layoffs won’t happen this week, but will be completed by July 9. She released Gannett’s memo announcing the layoffs to Register employees this afternoon.

With furloughs implemented in the first two quarters of the year, “the company was trying to save jobs in the first half of the year and I think what we’re seeing is the economy has not improved enough,” Hollingsworth said. “We’re seeing bright spots in many places, but not enough to reaffirm we’re on our way up.”

Gannett reported a 60 percent decline in net income in the first quarter compared with the year-ago period.

Hollingsworth said the number of layoffs at each newspaper will be based on the local market and vary across the country. She said her first priority is to protect the newsroom and sales and marketing teams sufficiently so that the Register will still be able to serve its customers.

Gannett cut about 10 percent of its work force last year.

The company will announce its second-quarter earnings on July 15.
