More than $7.2 million in funding was awarded to Iowa to help in the state’s recovery from 2008 flooding by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Sen. Chuck Grassley said Monday. The funding, which came through the Hazard Mitigation Grant program and the Public Assistance program, is obligated by FEMA for use on projects across Iowa, including repairs on the Iowa Theater Building in Cedar Rapids, repairs at the Museum of Art Building in Iowa City, and the demolishing of 28 residential properties in Mason City.

Economic and industry conditions are forcing Delta Airlines Inc. to discontinue its daily service to Salt Lake City at the end of August, according to a press release from Des Moines International Airport. Service had been restarted in late May, but Delta representatives said the route was no longer profitable. Service may be reinstated in the future if the economy and industry rebound, a Delta official said.

A proposed $2 billion extension of the Cash for Clunkers program, which the House of Representatives approved last Friday, could be doomed unless the Senate passes the bill, cnnmoney.com reported today. The program, which ripped through its initial $1 billion in funding, could have enough funding with the additional $2 billion to last through September, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said. Two key senators who had opposed the additional funding flipped Monday night, which helps Democratic leaders who are attempting to gather 60 votes to pass the bill by the end of the week.

Principal Financial Group Inc. reported operation earnings of $200.5 million in its second quarter Monday, down $53.6 million from the second quarter of 2008. Principal’s net income for the quarter was down $150.3 million, down $18 million from a year earlier.

Simply for Giggles, a Des Moines-based children’s furniture store, will close its West Glen Town Center location on Aug. 18, leaving a vacancy in a prime commercial location at 5525 Mills Civic Parkway, Suite 105, West Des Moines. The business’s owner, Tanya Keith, cited future expansion of the business’s flagship East Village store as reason for the closure.

West Bancorporation Inc. named James Noyce, senior advisor and major gifts officer for Drake University athletics, to serve on its board of directors late Monday. Noyce, the former CEO of FBL Financial Group Inc., stepped down from that position in April after just two years. He served as FBL’s chief financial officer from 1995 to 2007, and was with the company for 24 years. Noyce fills the vacancy on the board left by the departure on July 15 of Tom Stanberry, West Bancorporation’s former chairman and CEO.
