For $100, people can now get the same expert advice on lifestyle changes that many people don’t receive until after having serious health problems.

The Lifestyle Management Center at Iowa Health – Des Moines is a new service provided by the staff at the cardiac rehabilitation department at Iowa Lutheran Hospital.

Iowa’s health-care sector directly employs more than 186,000 people, and each health-care position generates an estimated additional two jobs in the community, for a total employment impact estimated at 375,470 employees, or more than one out of every five workers in the state. The number of health-care workers in Iowa increased by about 2 percent over the previous year, and the value of services provided by health-care organizations grew by $478 million, a 12 percent increase.

The 90-minute, one-on-one visit is designed to help people set realistic goals, and then customize a plan to help them succeed at those goals, said Susan Siefkas, director of the center. “People are often told by their doctors they need to lose weight or lower their blood pressure, but they don’t have a good feeling for how to get there,” she said. “So we felt we needed to offer our expertise to the community as well as to our patients.”

Mercy Medical Center doesn’t have a comparable program at its cardiac rehabilitation department, but does encourage patients’ family members to attend risk-modification classes, said Pat Cavanaugh, the department’s director.

For years, however, Mercy has offered a comprehensive “executive health check,” an exhaustive series of screening tests that starts at about $900, she said. Those opting for this checkup, which some companies provide as an executive benefit, can see a physician to discuss their risks and meet with an exercise physiologist to discuss steps they can take to reduce their health risks. Mercy, like Iowa Health, also offers screening programs that can come to the workplace.
