The Waukee City Council unanimously approved, with four out of the five council members present and with no amendments, a 28E agreement for the utilization of funds for the acquisition of land and development of a recreation trail.

The Dallas County Conservation Board and Dallas County made the agreement along with the cities of Waukee, Dallas Center, Minburn, Perry and Dawson. The trail, to be used for recreational activities such as biking, walking and jogging, is intended to start in Dawson and run south through Waukee.

The project has been under discussion for several years, said Waukee’s director of planning, Brad Deets. This meeting was a formalization to discuss funding and acquiring grant money to fund the project.

The property for the recreational trail, originally purchased by the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation and now owned by Dallas County, will cover an old railroad right of way. Funding is needed for the construction of the trail; the county has submitted applications for several grants. A portion of the north end of the trail is expected to be constructed within 2008. The construction on the southern end, involving the city of Waukee, Deets said, is anticipated to take place during 2009.
