Manatts Inc. of Clear Lake submitted the lowest of five bids for the Des Moines International Airport taxiway reconstruction project, $3,757,710.35. The city of Des Moines Engineering Department’s had estimated the cost at $4,365,302.25. The Des Moines International Airport Board approved Manatts’ bid at its March 4 meeting.
However, acceptance of the bid is subject to notification of available funds from the Federal Aviation Administration. “We hope to hear within the next week or so,” said Craig Smith, the airport’s aviation director. “We are at the mercy of the federal government when it comes to this.” Tim Stiles, deputy aviation director-finance, said the bill has been signed by President George W. Bush, and the funds are pending.
The project is broken into three divisions: Division one consists of replacing the surface pavement for Taxiway P; division two involves removing and replacing pavement by the east cargo apron; and division three entails routing and sealing the pavement joints on Runway 523. Divisions one and two are eligible for federal funding, and operating funds will be used to pay for the improvements included in division three.
The Engineering Department also received bids for improvements to the airport regulator room’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. The airport board approved the $48,150 bid from West Des Moines-based Corn States Metal Fabricators Inc. at its March 4 meeting. This project will mprove the ventilation of the airfield lights control room, which produces a significant amount of heat. “We want to make sure we have proper ventilation to keep the temperature at the right level,” Smith said, “so the equipment will not shut down on us.”
