Meredith Corp. announced today that it plans to report first-quarter results for fiscal 2009 on Wednesday, Oct. 29, prior to the opening of U.S. stock markets. Principal Financial Group Inc. has added Spanish-language content to its Web site by providing a new “En Español” option. The content focuses on introducing the company’s products, history, and community involvement to the Spanish-speaking community, providing financial education and calculators, and encouraging visitors to work with a financial adviser

The Des Moines Mayor’s office, Mayors for Peace, and Drake University will convene Thursday, Oct. 23, for a one-day conference titled “Nuclear Abolition, Climate Protection and Our Cities’ Future.” The conference will take place in Sheslow Auditorium on Drake’s campus and registration opens at 8:30 a.m. The day program is from 9 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. and an evening program will follow from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Speakers, mayors and local experts will be available for public comment at 7:15 p.m.

Three financial leaders, whose collective expertise encompass the regulatory and regulated sides of finance in domestic and international markets, will discuss the financial crisis Thursday, Oct. 23, during a roundtable discussion at Iowa State University titled “The Financial Crisis: What Now?” The roundtable will start at 6 p.m. in the Memorial Union Great Hall and is free and open to the public. The speakers include James Overdahl, chief economist for the Securities and Exchange Commission; Robert Baur, chief global economist for Principal Global Investors; and Ned Zachar, chartered financial analyst and portfolio manager for KLS Diversified.

Chicago-based Boeing Co. said a strike by the machinists union caused its earnings to plunge in the third quarter. The company said it earned $695 million, or 96 cents a share, down from $1.11 billion, or $1.44 a share, in the year-ago third quarter. Sales also slipped 7 percent to $15.29 billion.
