I’ve always believed in the power of gratitude. I don’t want to get too touchy-feely, but it does seem to me that the more we appreciate and openly demonstrate our thanks for what we have, the more we seem to get. I think this sentiment works in business as much as it does in our personal life.

All too often, businesses seem to think that their customers owe them something. Worse, they make their customers aware of this attitude.

When was the last time you said “thank you” and meant it? It doesn’t have to be done with an expensive gift or something showy. Just pick up the phone or a note card and say thanks.

When economic times get tough, one of the smartest strategies is to focus on your current customers. But that sales pitch flows a whole lot better if you’ve laid the groundwork by sincerely showing appreciation to your clients and their patronage before you need to go back to that well. If you’re not having much luck with your current customer base, perhaps they’ve been feeling a bit underappreciated.

It’s never too late to reach out and express your gratitude.

Another way you can say thank you is by giving back to your industry or community. Share your talents, services and goods. You’ll be amazed at the good will it generates. And most important of all – it’s the right thing to do.

Gratitude is not just a warm fuzzy. It is a very practical business tactic.

People want to be valued. The more you can make your clients feel your sincere appreciation, the more business you will earn. So get out there and say thanks!
