Gilligan and Detroit co-counsel Brian McKeen represented the family of Danny Oppenheim Jr., who died at the age of 33 while undergoing treatment in 2004 at Project Straight, a Michigan rapid detoxification center.

The now-defunct Project Straight aimed to help patients addicted to heroin, methadone and painkillers such as Vicodin and OxyContin. Patients received an anesthetic and medications to flush opioids from their bodies. Oppenheim, a former Des Moines resident, died of a loss of oxygen while under general anesthesia.

Oppenheim became addicted to painkillers after an accident. Michigan suspended the medical license of the anesthesiologist last November after another patient in his care died.

Oppenheim and Galligan met as students at Valley High School in West Des Moines. They graduated in 1988. Galligan worked for Farm and Home Builders in Des Moines.
