Two new YMCAs to be built
The YMCA of Greater Des Moines is planning to build two new facilities in Grimes and Waukee.
The new Waukee Y will be 70,000 square feet and carries an estimated price tag of $13 million. The facility will be located at the northwest corner of Hickman Road and Warrior Lane. The YMCA hopes to break ground in the spring.
The YMCA already has a 28,000-square-foot branch in Waukee at 575 E. University Ave., but officials say that because of its partnership with the school district and its 7,000 members, the building can’t handle the volume of people.
“Our current facility won’t meet our demand,” said Vernon Delpesce, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines.
A facility similar to the Waukee branch is also in the works for Grimes. The $10 million building will be located at the southeast corner of Iowa Highways 141 and 44. The YMCA will house a gym, swimming pools, indoor track and a fitness center. Currently the city does not have a YMCA.
Delpesce said if the current demographic trends for the northwest region of Des Moines continue, the Grimes YMCA will the largest branch in 10 years.
The land for both the Grimes and Waukee branches has been donated. YMCA officials would not announce who donated the land for the Waukee facility, respecting a request from the donor. The land for the Grimes branch was donated by Knapp Properties Inc.
