The Stoney Creek Inn expects to attract more business and extended-stay travelers thanks to a recently completed expansion designed with adults in mind.

In July, the Johnston hotel opened The Cottages of Stoney Creek Inn, a 30,000-square-foot building about 30 feet away from its main lodge with 24 extended-stay cottages. The building that houses the cottages functions as a separate hotel in many ways. Cottage guests have their own concierge service, 24-hour fitness center with an infrared sauna, business center, recreation room with a shuffleboard court and a poker table and laundry room. In addition, cottage guests are served a hot breakfast in the morning and hors d’oeuvres and cocktails in the evening. Each room also has a speakerphone, voice mail and its own phone number.

According to Brady Mishler, Stoney Creek Inn’s hospitality manager, the cottages are a “quiet, business-oriented building.”

“We’re very family oriented in the main lodge, but we want the cottages to be mainly an adult building so we try to keep kids out of there,” Mishler said.

Although the cottage building includes amenities not found in the main lodge, its guests also have access to the main lodge’s services and amenities, including the Wilderness Park recreation area and about 10,000-square feet of meeting space, Mishler said. Since the cottages opened about two months ago, Mishler said they have been most widely used by business travelers, people who have recently relocated to the area or people who have had some type of catastrophe in their home, such as a fire.

Mishler said the Stoney Creek Inn, which operates hotels in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Missouri, also has extended-stay cottages at four of its other hotels, but not on this scale.

“We have other properties where we have done this, but not to the extent that we’ve done here, with the high-end amenities and the concierge,” Mishler said. “This is something new for the company.”

The Northwoods décor of the main lodge is also incorporated in the cottages.

Each room or suite includes a king-size bed and large living area with a sofa sleeper. Most rooms contain an executive desk, two TVs and a full kitchen with a stovetop for cooking, refrigerator, coffee maker and convection microwave oven. The kitchen cupboards are stocked with dishes and cookware.

The eight extended-stay cottages each have about 550 square feet of living space.

There are two extended-stay suites that are a little larger than the standard cottage rooms and include a whirlpool spa, stone fireplace and four-person boardroom table that’s suitable for either work or entertainment. One of the cottages is a mini-premier suite, with a whirlpool spa, oversized wet bar, fireplace and flat-screen TVs. The three 3-room expanded executive suites include amenities for the business traveler such as a large work area, in-room printer and massage chairs. There are also four whirlpool suites and five theme suites.

The rates for the cottages range from $140 to $250 per night, depending on the type of room. But Mishler said the hotel offers discounted rates to guests who stay five nights or more.
