Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa’s (BBBSCI) “Building a Big Future” capacity campaign has raised $900,000 of its $2.2 million goal, the nonprofit announced. Funds from the campaign will help build a 10,500-square-foot youth mentoring center located at 2130 Grand Ave. in Des Moines. Local companies, including Dahl Trust, John Deere, NCMIC, Stine Seed Co., William C. Knapp Foundation and the Dixon Family have committed financial support. Renovations are underway on the new mentoring center, and the facility is anticipated to open in early fall 2024, a news release said. The additional space will allow BBBSCI to serve more youths and expand its community outreach. “Our new youth mentoring center will transform how we deliver mentoring to Central Iowa. We will become a safe space for our young people to come to feel welcome, to feel like they belong and to get some of their basic needs fulfilled — socially or emotionally,” BBBSCI CEO Bridget Cravens-Neely said in a prepared statement.
