It would be easy in today’s world of huge student loan debt to fall behind on a payment or two — or more. For some people, the consequences of falling behind are dire. Some report losing their driver’s or professional licenses. The New York Times highlights this in a recent article. There are 20 states with laws on the books that permit officials to go after student loan borrowers who are delinquent on their payments, the Times writes. Iowa is among them, although state officials said they don’t use the rule. There’s been some good news for Iowa students in the last few years, but this article reinforces that higher education costs are a challenge for not just students but also for the state officials and employers who say Iowa needs skilled workers.
