The Des Moines airport authority board agreed to a new deal with the city of Des Moines that covers group insurance for employees, a flat fee for three airport police officers, and city access to a shared information technology system. The airport authority will pay Des Moines a flat fee of $2.3 million for three officers who will cover the airport at all hours, and the airport will stop making “trip” fees for police calls at the airport that are generally covered by officers stationed there. That is in addition to a $700,000 payment in lieu of taxes that the airport makes for general police and fire coverage by the city. The airport will pay the city $10 per employee per month for administrative fees regarding the group benefits program. Airport authority board member Jake Christensen called the agreement, months in the making, “fair” and lauded airport and city staffers who worked on it.
