The Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization has distributed $15.1 million to 16 transportation projects in Greater Des Moines.

The projects include $2 million for the Guthrie Avenue viaduct in Des Moines, $1.4 million for Grand Avenue improvements in West Des Moines, $1.2 million for the widening of West First Street in Ankeny, and $600,000 for the High Trestle Trail extension in Ankeny. A grant of $1.4 million to the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority will pay for replacement buses.

The federal grant money comes in October 2021.

West Des Moines Mayor and MPO Chairman Steve Gaer said the grants fit the MPO mission to enhance multimodal transportation options, optimize existing transportation infrastructure, improve the region’s environmental health, and further the health, safety and well-being of residents.
