Recommended reads for your afternoon break
This week’s recommendations come to you a day later than usual but still contain some worthwhile topics for managers and business leaders from some national news sources this time. We’ll take a closer look at some state news next week. (BTW, Mother’s Day was a needed break from news reading and a welcome time to read a novel. May all working parents of Greater Des Moines have had a wonderful day!) From CNN, “This is why everyday racial profiling is so dangerous,” which discusses through text, images and video the unconscious biases we can have in everyday life and at work. The article points out that racial profiling not only hurts the recipient but also the holders of the stereotypes. From the New York Times, “The gender pay gap: Trying to narrow it” looks at how British companies are attempting to address the difference in pay between men and women now that they must disclose the difference. From USA Today, if you didn’t catch it Monday, “What it means: Supreme Court strikes down PASPA law that limited sports betting” gives the details on the big news out of the justices. This could be big business or a big headache. Here’s the Business Record’s update with the head of the Iowa Gaming Association.
