NOTEBOOK: The hoodies and the suits

The entrepreneurial community is notorious for an unofficial commitment to hoodies, and frankly, speakers at this week’s EntreFEST, a two-day start-up event in Cedar Rapids, wouldn’t be doing their jobs well without a little lighthearted poking at our favorite stereotype.

It appeared in speaker Victor Hwang’s Thursday keynote, as he outlined onstage the value of getting “the hoodies and the suits” of entrepreneurial and corporate industry connected and working together. It sneakily slipped in to the souvenir-worthy illustrated EntreFEST guide’s opening comic, with a white cup of coffee in each determined founder’s hand. (Have you ever seen a ninja wear a hoodie? You have if you went to EntreFEST.)

It’s a culture thing. But it was also 80 degrees in the streets of downtown Cedar Rapids — not ideal hoodie weather even with some serious air-conditioning at a few indoor sessions (although I spotted a few good blazer/T-shirt combinations). Alas, the visual metaphor of the mingling hoodies and suits bonding over free iced coffee was not to be enjoyed this year, but at least we have Raygun to fill the startup summer wardrobe.
