NOTEBOOK: Dwolla’s Milne: Look to math for future cybersecurity

Ben Milne, founder of Dwolla and board member of the Technology Association of Iowa, has built a few things that went wrong over the years.

“Someday I hope to get an honorary degree,” Milne said as a keynote speaker during last week’s Technology Councils of North America Summer Conference in Des Moines. “I dropped out of college and have a high school education, so that’s the only way I’m going to get it.”

Today, the Dwolla platform helps businesses exchange billions of dollars online with U.S. banks, and Milne is widely regarded as a Des Moines success story. It was fitting to see him welcome international technology council members to Iowa last week.

While answering a few crowd questions, Milne laid out some of Dwolla’s core beliefs, which he says will keep them in business for a long time.

“I believe the internet will become faster; I believe it will become foundationally more important for our infrastructure,” Milne said. “I believe that security is no longer guns. It’s math.”
