Thirteen out of 22 Iowa-based companies posted gains for the month of July. Nine posted losses in the month. 

The top three companies that posted gains are: HNI Corp. with a 16.32 percent gain, United Fire Group Inc. with a 10.60 percent gain and Principal Financial Group InC. with a 9.69 percent gain. 

Three companies posted double-digit percentage losses in July. KemPharm Inc. was down 36.92 percent, NewLink Genetics Corp. was down 20.59 percent and Flexsteel Industries Inc. was down 10.20 percent. NewLink Genetics Corp. reported a second-quarter loss and recently completed an organization realignment.

The Iowa Index, an unweighted average price of 22 Iowa-based public companies, increased by 2.83 percent from June and was up 8.65 percent on a year-over-year basis, the Business Record’s monthly snapshot of Iowa companies shows. 

By comparison, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 4.71 percent during the month and 16.10 percent from a year ago.
