The Iowa Power Fund Board on Wednesday awarded more than $3 million in grant funding to Acciona Windpower North America LLC for a project to install its latest wind generation turbine technology, the AW-3000 wind turbines, in Iowa.

The state’s investment will leverage more than $16 million in matching funds from the company for the nearly $20 million project, according to the Iowa Department of Economic Development. The grant will help Acciona commercialize its AW-3000 wind turbine, the first 3-megawatt turbines the Spanish company will install in North America. Construction of test turbines in Cedar County is expected to begin in late summer, with project completion by spring 2012. Following commercialization of the technology, Acciona will produce the turbines at its West Branch manufacturing plant.
