After all these years, Valley Junction is ready for a master plan

The city of West Des Moines is searching for a consultant to help develop a master plan for Valley Junction, the original West Des Moines that was founded in 1893 and was noted in the early days as a rough-and-tumble railroad town. The city would like to establish a plan for commercial and residential development in an area that reaches west from First to Eighth streets and north from Railroad Avenue to Vine Street. In 2010, the city went through a process to determine the best way to market the area, and it would be difficult to argue with the success of the Fifth Street business district, which was enhanced by a streetscape project in the 1980s. Now the city wants a master plan. Replies to a request for proposals are due by 2 p.m. Sept. 9. For more information, contact Naomi Hamlett at  naomi.hamlett@wdm.iowa.gov.
