Auditor questions time sheets, background check policy at Iowa Workforce Development

An annual review by the state auditor’s office found not all Iowa Workforce Development employees appear to be reporting “actual hours worked” on specific programs, Radio Iowa reports. According to the auditor’s report, payroll costs may be charged to the wrong program after the department failed to clearly communicate proper procedures for tracking employee work hours. The auditor also found the agency does not routinely conduct background checks on individuals applying for “sensitive” jobs, particularly IT staff and employees handling cash, Radio Iowa reports. The department has directed supervisors to more closely monitor hourly pay records, and is developing a list of jobs that should require background checks.
