Broadlawns Medical Center on Wednesday hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for its new medical clinic building, residency housing and inpatient behavioral health remodel and expansion.

The 72,000-square-foot medical clinic building is being erected on the eastern portion of the Broadlawns campus. The state-of-the-art facility will house the Family Health Center, Outpatient Behavioral Health and the Dental Clinic.

Additionally, a 15-unit apartment building is being constructed to house residents from Broadlawns’ family medicine residency program, and construction has begun to modernize and expand the inpatient behavioral health unit.

“It’s a privilege to attend to the health care needs of our community,” Broadlawns President and CEO Jody Jenner said in a release. “These projects will significantly impact our ability to expand access to high-quality, affordable health care.”

The new medical clinic building and the residency housing are expected to be completed in early 2017. Renovations of the existing inpatient behavioral health unit will be completed in March 2016, and the expanded inpatient bed capacity is estimated for completion in 12 to 18 months.

Strengthening community-based behavioral health services for adults is among the recommendations of a report released by three human services agencies earlier this year.
