But not all workers qualify for time off, according to Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate — and those who do would still need to tell their Election Day plans to their employer. Iowans are entitled to three hours of paid time off work to participate in the election if they don’t have three consecutive hours free while the polls are open when they are not on shift. If a worker is eligible for three hours off, they must put in a written request with a boss or supervisor for that time off before Election Day.
