For anyone who has ever wished there was more they could do in the fight against cancer, the American Cancer Society is offering a golden opportunity to Greater Des Moines residents.
The American Cancer Society has begun recruiting volunteers to take part in Cancer Prevention Study 3 (CPS-3), a long-term, nationwide public health research study. The study, aimed at better understanding the factors that cause or prevent cancer, is open to men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer other than minor skin cancers.
The organization’s goal is to recruit at least 300,000 volunteers nationwide who will commit to answering health questionnaires about once a year throughout the 20-year study. Statewide, the organization hopes to recruit more than 2,600 Iowans.
“Ultimately, CPS-3 hopes to eliminate cancer as a major health concern for our future generations,” said Liddy Hora, healthcare systems account manager for the American Cancer Society’s Midwest Division, during a press conference yesterday. Iowa Health – Des Moines, Mercy Medical Center and Greater Des Moines’ three network television stations are leading the information campaign to enroll volunteers in Central Iowa.
A four-day open enrollment period for study volunteers will be held April 17-20 at the hospitals. Volunteers must first visit www.cps3desmoines.com to complete a preliminary questionnaire and schedule an appointment. Organizers said additional days to complete individual enrollments will be added if necessary and that no one who is eligible to participate in the study will be turned away.
A community kick-off event to provide more information for volunteers who want to serve as “community champions” to provide more information to their organizations will be held March 15 at 8 a.m. at the American Cancer Society’s Des Moines office, 8364 Hickman Road. Contact Liddy Hora at (515) 576-7975 or email her at liddy.hora@cancer.org to register.
