Cancer study meets initial goal
More than 1,100 Greater Des Moines residents have enrolled in a landmark cancer study, an American Cancer Society official said Wednesday. The Cancer Prevention Study 3 (CPS-3), a nationwide, long-term research study aimed at gathering new data on the factors that cause or prevent cancer. Locally, the cancer society has expanded its goal, initially 1,000, to 1,400 during an open enrollment period this week, said Liddy Hora, a spokeswoman for the Midwest division. More than 120,000 U.S. residents have enrolled for the study, which seeks at least 300,000 participants by December 2013. Participants must be between the ages of 35 and 60, have never been diagnosed with cancer other than minor skin cancers and be willing to commit to responding to periodic questionnaires during the 20- to 30-year study.
