The Des Moines City Council on Monday accepted a bid nearly $4 million below the expected cost to demolish the parking garage at Grand Avenue and Seventh Street downtown, reports DesMoinesRegister.com. City staff said the 63 percent reduction — $2.25 million compared with the city engineer’s estimate of $6.1 million — is a result of the winning bidder, D.W. Zinzer Co. of Walford, being able to recycle and repurpose concrete and other materials from the demolition. The concrete will be crushed and used as aggregate.
