249 wordsAll Latest News, Arts and Culture, TransportationWorkers who commute to and from downtown, pay attention. This may be the most important news you get today: Speed cameras will be back on Interstate 235 starting next Monday (June 25), according to a release from the Des Moines Police Department.
“After much discussion, and data analysis, the City of Des Moines has made the decision to ‘turn on’ the I-235 ATE speed radar camera at 12:01 a.m., 25 June 2018,” the release says. (You can read more on the Des Moines Police Department’s Facebook page.)
The Des Moines Register gets into some of the more recent drama of the cameras. They were turned off in April 2017, following a court order from the Polk County District Court. But this past April, the Iowa Supreme Court issued a ruling that the Iowa Department of Transportation did not have the authority to regulate the cameras, allowing cities to use the speed cameras, the Register reported.
Here’s what violators face: Vehicles traveling at 71 mph or faster will be issued citations. The fines remain the same; $65 for speed violations 1-15 mph over the posted speed limit; $75 for speed violations 16-20 mph over the posted speed limit; and $80 for 21 mph over the speed limit, plus $2 for every mile per hour over.
In case you didn’t know this: Speed limits on I-235 are 65 mph, 60 mph and 55 mph at different sections. Watch those signs.
Bottom line: Prepare next week to heed the speed limit.
