Consumers prefer choice on overdraft protection

Only 22 percent of consumers holding an automated teller machine (ATM) or debit card have opted-in for debit card overdraft protection, according to a national poll by the Consumer Reports National Research Center. The poll was conducted about two months after federal regulations went into effect requiring banks to get their customers’ permission before signing them up for costly overdraft programs. The poll showed that of those consumers who signed up to have debit card or ATM transactions covered for a fee, 55 percent had experienced an overdraft in the past six months. Thirty-nine percent of those whose accounts had been overdrawn in the past six months chose not to sign up for the coverage. Seventy percent of poll respondents said they would like to have a choice when it comes to whether their bank covers the checks they write for a fee when they do not have enough money in their accounts to cover them.
