The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) has received a $1.125 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration, which it will use to replace five of its older buses with new hybrid buses. The upgrade to hybrid buses will reduce carbon emissions by 75 percent and save approximately $2,800 annually in fuel costs for each bus. DART currently has one hybrid bus in its fleet; without the additional funding it would have replaced five 1998 model diesel buses with similar diesel-powered buses, officials said.
