Fewer Iowa high school graduates are taking remedial coursework during their first year at Iowa’s community colleges and state universities, according to new data posted Wednesday on the state’s Postsecondary Readiness Reports website. The percentage of students who took a remedial math class at an Iowa community college or state university within one year of high school graduation declined to 13 percent for 2016 high school graduates, down from 19 percent of 2011 graduates. Remedial English class enrollment declined to 6 percent among the Class of 2016 versus from 10 percent for the Class of 2011. “This is great news for our state and specifically for the Future Ready Iowa initiative, which focuses on helping more Iowans pursue rewarding careers and employers hire the skilled workers they need,” Gov. Kim Reynolds said in a release. While high schools and higher learning institutions are making big strides, more remains to be done to ensure students are ready for higher education or further training, she said.
